in private collection in Ireland
This is my first self-portrait painting in a series of seven. I discovered early in my schooling at the Burren College of Art in Ireland that blackberries could be used as dye and ink. As the west coast where I lived was covered with them, I decided to have a go at using it for paint. It was so delightful I created an entire series of self-portrait paintings with it. This painting was an experiment with incorporating embroidery and wax (both local beeswax and store bought). The embroidered birds in this painting are called Terns and are local around the coast of Ireland. I titled the painting “Turns” in honor of both them and the ways that I have had many turning points in my life through darkness into light and back again, which became the theme of the series.
