This beautiful original painting is made with handmade black walnut ink on poke berry dyed cotton fabric. Poke berry, or poke weed, is a common plant that grows where I live in southern Appalachia. The beautiful magenta colored dye from the poke berry is not long lasting, but the fabric used as the background for this portrait painting was dyed in 2017, submerged in a huge dye bath. This pale pink has lasted all these years without fading at all. (I am writing this in 2026). Black walnut ink is used by many artists and has a very long (maybe forever?) life. There are documents written in black walnut ink from 100 years ago that have not faded at all, and the Cherokee people have been using this native dye plant successfully for thousands of years. (I recommend a trip to the museum in Cherokee to see black walnut ink on their beautiful baskets). So rest assured that it will last long into the future.
