I made this painting because of the cliff swallows who build billions of mud nests under the bridge that goes over the French Broad River by the River Arts District in Asheville. My studio in the Phil Mechanics Studios is right beside this bridge. In the summer, the birds are swarming and swooping around everywhere going to and from their nests. Its amazing to stand in the center of the bridge and watch them because their nests are right below your feet! Its like a celebration of flight! I love it! I just stand there watching and laughing gleefully. We are all connected. I foraged the paint/ink for this painting from Appalachia where the cliff swallows live. The goldenrod for the dyed cotton also came from the hills in the spring and the water from the French Broad River and other creeks and streams.
