I painted this painting as part of a series of self-portraits made during my time at the Burren College of Art in Ireland in 2016. This painting began as a thick piece of cotton that I stitched up with lines leading towards the center. I don’t know what compelled me to do this but what unintentionally resulted was this image looking as though she is shielding herself from broken glass. I love how when the heart takes over the creating process and we refuse to analyze or intellectualize the work images speak to us in ways we would have never imagined. I see myself in this painting, both literally and figuratively. The attempts I’ve made in my life to protect myself, the ways I’ve kept my true self hidden, the false feeling of safety sought. This series of paintings as a whole ended up being a very accurate reflection of the stages of my life. I’m sure many can relate. A stage of Darkness, a stage of Quiet, a stage of self-protection, a stage of stepping Into the Light.
