Hand embroidery on poke berry dyed cotton fabric

The cliff swallows are birds that carry little balls of mud in their beaks and make mud nests attached to cliffs and under bridges. Outside my old studio in the Phil Mechanics Studios in Asheville’s River Arts District is the French Broad River. If you walk to the center of the bridge in the spring and look down into the river, you will find thousands of cliff swallows swooping about at your feet. It’s so delightful to see them. I lived in my studio for a brief amount of time and I used to do this ritual often, which resulted in a whole series of paintings and embroidery. This hand embroidery “painting” is an ode to them.
