This painting is part of a series of self-portraits that I painted during my schooling at the Burren College of Art on the west coast of Ireland. In the fall, as the school year is beginning, the coast of Ireland becomes covered in blackberry brambles. Imagine winding country roads weaving through blackberry covered rock walls and you’ll have an idea of what I discovered as I began my time in Ireland. To my delight, I also discovered that these same blackberries could be used to dye fabric. I spent the remainder of my time there experimenting with it as ink to paint a series of self-portraits. I love that Earth was invited into my studio with me. I make a practice to ask her for permission first as the indigenous people of America always have. They recognize the truth that all Earth is conscious. We are made of her and we are her. It is my deep honor to have her enter my studio with me in this way. This painting is titled “Quiet.” I have found quietness to also be a sweet and important companion of mine along my journey. As I painted and titled this series, it occurred to me that what was emerging was a self-portrait of my inner journey. And so the paintings are titled accordingly. May you as well, find that quiet center inside of you.
